Polymers for Quick-Commerce Packaging: Why Rigidity Specifications Are Changing

November 7, 2026

What Quick Commerce Does to a Package That Normal E-commerce Does Not

Conventional e-commerce packages are typically packed for longer for hub-based transport. In contrast, quick-commerce orders are picked within minutes from within dark-store shelves, and can be a mixture of products packed into tightly filled delivery bags. A rigid FMCG pack may be squashed up against bottles, chilled goods or even heavy grocery items. It must remain rigid and withstand sidewall collapse, lid pull off, leakage and flex during transit, without being over thick or over weight.

Old Packaging Specification vs Quick-Commerce Specification

Requirement Traditional Specification Quick-Commerce Specification
Primary Load Vertical stacking Stacking plus side compression
Handling Planned, packaged shipment Rapid picking and mixed loads
Failure Focus Cracking or transit damage Leaks, dents, lid release and deformation
Design Priority Maximum stiffness Balanced stiffness and impact strength
Validation Standard drop test Real delivery-route simulation

The specification is shifting from “make it rigid” to “retain shape, absorb impact and keep the closure secure.

Which Polymers Are Being Specified Now—and Why

Packaging converters are evaluating several materials:

  • PP homopolymer: good stiffness, low weight, easy to mold into rigid containers such as tubs and lids.
  • PP impact copolymer: Useful where there is a risk of drop damage, use at low temperatures or packs subject to rough handling.
  • POE-modified PP: Polyolefin elastomer to improve impact resistance by dispersing and dosing the appropriate amount.
  • HDPE: Bottles, Closures & Containers – General purpose that requires toughness and chemical resistance.
  • PET: Provides clear rigid containers and trays that have visibility and dimensional stability.
  • Multilayer structures: Stiffness, barrier, sealability & toughness.

The Rigidity–Impact Trade-Off

The EVA plastic granules are used for flexible seals and special soft-touch parts and also as adhesive layers. Additional flexible parts can be made of the EVA granules.

When selecting EVA granules it is advisable to seek the advice of an experienced manufacturer of eva granules. The eva foam material may be used to make cushioning in secondary or protective packaging applications.

What Packaging Converters Must Rethink

Converters must switch to purchasing converters on the basis of the required performance as opposed to just the resin name.

  • Define top-load and side-compression requirements.
  • Measure drop impact at actual service temperatures.
  • Test lid retention, hinge life and leak resistance.
  • Simulate mixed loads inside delivery bags.
  • Review wall thickness and rib geometry.
  • Validate recycled-content effects by batch.
  • Compare output, scrap and cycle time.
  • Confirm migration compliance for food-contact packs.
  • Approve more than one technically equivalent grade.
  • Record resin, masterbatch and modifier traceability.

The best material is that which consistently meets the finished-pack specification and is not necessarily the stiffest material listed on a data sheet.

EPR Compliance Adds Another Specification Challenge

The Indian plastic-packaging EPR framework places obligations on manufacturers, importers and brand owners to register, report in categories and fulfill any relevant recycling and recycled content requirements for their products. Thus, issues with the materials in a new product need to be reviewed in respect of their recyclability, packaging category and relevant documentation. cpcb.nic.in

Note: A pack that is made of a complex multilayer structure to solve a barrier / impact problem may create additional problems for recycling. Check design for recycling, food contact and EPR classification before clearance for commercialization.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are single-wall cartons failing in quick-commerce deliveries?

Single-wall is not inherently problematic for single-use, short-term purposes. Problems arise with insufficient initial strength, moisture, dimensions that are not quite right, excessive voids, inadequate closures or bags that compress into delivery bags that contain all kinds of articles.

2. Which polymer is best for rigid FMCG packaging for Blinkit and Zepto type of deliveries?

No platform-specific polymer is better than others. PP, Impact PP, HDPE and PET packaging materials are selected on the basis of application, temperature, closure, barrier, clarity and impact requirements.

3. What is POE’s role in PP packaging?

POE is used to improve drop impact resistance and low temperature toughness. However, excessive levels can result in a product that is too soft and not rigid enough. This must be validated through compound testing and finished pack testing.

4. How does EPR affect polymer selection?

More focus on the packaging category by EPR, recyclability, percentage of recycled material where applicable, traceability & reporting.

5. Where can converters source impact-grade PP and POE?

JITSY enables buyers to jointly specify technical requirements for impact-resistant PP and POE and compare key product properties. Suitable suppliers can be requested from across India.

Final Thoughts

Packaging for quick commerce requires a balance of rigidity, toughness, secure closure and recyclability. JITSY allows converters to specify packaging materials against pack performance requirements, rather than simply specifying by resin name.
