Sourcing High-Purity Resins for Healthcare: COC and Radiation-Sterilisable PP Explained

November 7, 2026

Why Healthcare Polymer Sourcing Is a Different Discipline

Healthcare polymers are potentially in contact with medicines, biological samples, human or animal tissues or even patients during their use. As a result, procurement of healthcare materials needs to look beyond low cost, melt flow and color. Identity of the material, biocompatibility, extractables, resistance to sterilization, documentation and change control are key parameters. A material that processes well into a component can go wrong later in service due to the effects of radiation, sterilization by steam, aging and leaching by drugs.

What Is COC Resin and Why Healthcare Specifies It?

Cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) is an amorphous thermoplastic made from cyclic olefin and alpha-olefin monomers. Healthcare grades of COC are available.

  • High optical clarity
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Strong water-vapour barrier
  • Low levels of extractable substances
  • Accurate replication of small moulded features
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Low autofluorescence in suitable diagnostic applications

Properties of the material such as autofluorescence, extractables and bio-compatibility can vary between grades of Cyclic Olefin Copolymer and therefore the term “COC” does not imply biocompatibility, sterilisability or acceptance by regulatory authorities for specific applications.

What Is Radiation Sterilisable PP?

Conventional polypropylene can undergo chain scission, oxidation, embrittlement, discoloration etc. after gamma or electron-beam irradiation.

Radiation sterilisable PP has been developed with a specific resin architecture and stabilization package to maintain critical properties post-irradiation and subsequent aging. The material must be validated at minimum and maximum dose, at various component thicknesses, in the presence of oxygen and within a specific shelf life.

ISO 11137 is a standard that covers development, validation and control of radiation sterilization. It does not automatically make every radiation labeled resin suitable for use with every device.

COC vs Radiation-Sterilisable PP

Requirement COC Radiation-stabilised PP
Optical clarity Typically excellent Grade-dependent
Moisture barrier Strong Moderate
Flexibility Usually limited Better in suitable grades
Precision moulding Strong Application-dependent
Gamma/e-beam stability Grade-specific Designed for irradiation
Steam resistance Depends on glass-transition temperature and grade Grade-specific
Relative material cost Generally higher Usually more economical

Neither material is universally better. Selection depends on the device, drug contact, sterilisation method, regulatory pathway and required performance after ageing.

Key Applications and Which Resin Is Specified

  • Prefilled syringe barrels: This application requires a COC material with clarity, break strength and a moisture barrier.
  • Diagnostic cartridges: COC for optical inspection, dimensional accuracy and microfluidic features.
  • Microplates and optical devices: COC material where transparency and minimal auto-fluorescence are key.
  • Medical-device housings: Healthcare-grade PP for production purposes.
  • Sterilised trays and closures: radiation stabilized PP after dose and ageing validation.
  • Laboratory consumables: Either material depending on necessary clarity, stability to chemicals, sterilisation and cost.
  • Drug contact components: Material must pass extractables, leachables and compatibility tests.

Plastic microspheres of industrial quality (including polymer and expandable types) are not to be confused with specific healthcare quality COC or PP microspheres. The plastic microspheres intended for medical/diagnostic use have their own requirements for purity, biological-safety and for regulatory approval.

Hollow polymer microspheres as well as thermally expandable microspheres, supplied via general microspheres distributors, must not be introduced to a healthcare formulation without formal qualification and approved documentation.

What Procurement Teams Must Have Before Sourcing

Request and review:

  • Exact manufacturer, manufacturing site and grade
  • Current technical and safety data sheets
  • Lot-specific certificate of analysis
  • Material-composition and additive information
  • Biological-evaluation evidence relevant to intended contact
  • Extractables and leachables information where applicable
  • Sterilisation compatibility and validated dose range
  • Accelerated and real-time ageing data
  • Regulatory declarations and market-specific status
  • Change-notification or change-control policy
  • Batch traceability and shelf-life information
  • Approved colourant and masterbatch details

From ISO 10993-1’s perspective, the biological evaluation is part of a risk management process. Therefore, a test report for the resin does not automatically guarantee the finished device is safe to use biologically.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes COC suitable for syringes and diagnostic cartridges?

Such grades are transparent, have low water pick up, are dimensionally stable and have suitable barrier properties. Drug contact, sterilization method, syringe or diagnostic cartridge design and required documentation are decisive for the final suitability of PP.

2. At what radiation dose does standard PP degrade?

The changes can occur within typical sterilization dose levels (15 – 25 kGy) depending on grade, oxygen, dose rate and aging. PP grades that are ‘stabilized’ are formulated to resist such changes.

3. Which sterilisation methods work?

COC and certain specialized grades of PP can be sterilized by gamma, e-beam or Ethylene Oxide. However, the suitability of Steam sterilization will depend upon the material grade, temperature, design of component and the sterilization cycle employed. The completed device must be validated for its sterilization efficacy.

4. What documents should an Indian device maker request?

Request for document TDS, SDS, CoA, traceability, material composition, sterilization data, biological evaluation data, extractables data, regulatory status and change control.

5. Can JITSY supply these resins with full documentation?

We can identify suitable suppliers for you and ask for necessary documentation such as CoA, ISO 10993 evidence and FDA master-file references. However, FDA master files are generally confidential and can only be referred to by authorized persons in appropriate regulatory contexts.

Final Thoughts

We would appreciate information on your specific medical device, contact type and process and JITSY can advise on the most suitable grades of COC and medical-grade PP resins with full documentation to support sterilization validation and lifetime traceability.
